Neumann KK 185 Hypercardioid Microphone Capsule
The Neumann KK 185 is a hypercardioid microphone capsule designed for the KM A/D modular system. It combines strong directivity with a discreet appearance: the matte surface does not reflect stage lighting and keeps the capsule low-profile, an important quality in theater, filmed concerts, and television productions.
The hypercardioid polar pattern attenuates sounds coming from the sides and rear by approximately 10 dB, with the point of minimum sensitivity around 120°. This reduces bleed from monitors and adjacent instruments, providing cleaner recordings and higher gain before feedback. It is an ideal capsule for close-miked instruments on stage, for snare and toms, for speech in noisy environments, and for speakers in conference rooms.
Compact and lightweight, the capsule mounts onto either the KM A analog output stage or the KM D digital output stage and can be separated from the electronics by up to 100 meters using KVG extension tubes, swivel joints, and dedicated cables. This modularity allows the microphone to be quickly adapted to the needs of any production simply by changing the capsule head. The frequency response extends from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, with a sensitivity of 10 mV/Pa and a self-noise level of 15 dB-A; the maximum sound pressure level of 142 dB SPL reaches 152 dB with preattenuation.
