Neumann KK 184 Cardioid Microphone Capsule
The Neumann KK 184 is a cardioid microphone capsule, part of the KM A/D modular system. The matte black coating reduces reflections and makes the microphone low-profile, a feature highly valued in television broadcasts, filmed concerts, theaters, and any situation where equipment needs to blend in seamlessly.
Acoustically, the capsule is a cardioid pressure gradient transducer derived from the highly acclaimed KM 184. Its frequency response curves remain uniform and parallel across a wide angle, ensuring that instruments and voices off-axis maintain a natural timbre. It is an excellent choice for acoustic guitars, piano, strings, woodwinds, drum overheads, and XY or ORTF stereo recording techniques.
The KM A/D system capsules are passive and very compact, measuring 22 mm in diameter and 18 mm in length, and they pair with either the KM A analog output stage or the KM D digital output stage. Using KVG extension tubes, the SG 110 swivel joint, and dedicated cables, the capsule can be placed up to 100 meters away from the output stage electronics for flexible, discreet setups. Performance lives up to the Neumann name: a sensitivity of 15 mV/Pa, a self-noise level of 13 dB-A, a maximum sound pressure level of 138 dB SPL (148 dB with preattenuation), and a dynamic range of 122 dB-A when used with the digital stage. It is a versatile cardioid module, ideal to combine with other KK series capsules to build a complete microphone setup.
